Our Mission

Our mission is to put books in the hands of children who might not otherwise have regular access to them: children in shelters, homeless children, and undocumented children.

We accomplish this by partnering with organizations these children frequent and establishing "book nooks" in these locations. The "book nooks" typically take the form of bookshelves in waiting rooms or little library-type areas in these organizations. However, we do not mandate that every partnership establish a "book nook" but rather encourage them to use the books we supply in whatever way works best for them.

How it Started

I've been an avid reader my entire life and have always loved books. My mom read to me constantly as a kid until I was old enough to start reading on my own. In elementary school, I would carry a book with me wherever I went and the library was one of my favorite places to visit. Today, reading is still one of my favorite hobbies.

When I read Invisible Child, Andrea Elliott's book detailing the life of the Coates family in the housing projects of Brooklyn, my eyes were opened to struggles of poverty that I had never known before. Elliot's detailed and transparent reporting of the highs and lows of living in one of the country's most impoverished neighborhoods fascinated me. I knew I wanted to help in whatever way I could.

I ultimately settled on the idea of distributing children's books, thanks to the huge impact reading had on my own life. Because I was fortunate to grow up surrounded by books, I recognize their extreme value and see the positive impact they had on my life as a whole. Thus, the Book Nook Project was born.
